I discovered the book thru this video of the author giving a talk/presentation at Google. This is a terrific presentation that's helpful in understanding why people act the way they do at work and the underlying motivations to those actions. After watching the video I immediately bought the book.

After reading 17 books so far this year “Your Brain at Work” by Dr. David Rock has been the most impactful. I discovered the book thru this video of the author giving a talk/presentation at Google. This is a terrific presentation that’s helpful in understanding why people act the way they do at work and the underlying motivations to those actions. After watching the video I immediately bought the book.

If you’ve ever been nervous before a big meeting or presentation this book explains why. If you’ve ever blown an opportunity or had a meltdown with a colleague this books sheds light on why that might have happened. What sets the book apart from others is the familiar context the author uses. The book follows two people, a husband and wife, during a typical work day. He’s a consultant, she’s a marketing exec at a new job. The book presents familiar work scenarios for each chapter which taxes a certain part of the brain (like a meeting with a big client or a conflict with a co-worker). The chapters illustrate typical brain responses then explains what’s going on inside the brain. Each chapter ends with the scenario replayed using the new understanding.

It’s surprising to learn that most of us work in a way that doesn’t fit how our brain works. For example, most of us check email first thing in the morning. That’s the opposite of what we should do. There’s plenty more enlightening and counterintuitive lessons in the book.

This is a video of a talk the author gave at Google which summarizes much of what’s in the book.

Give this video a spin. Gary calls it like he sees it and gives some no-nonsense advice to those in real estate.

There’s no doubt that over the past several years marketing has become a much more crucial skill for the successful real estate professional. Consumers armed with more education, more choice and less time demand better experiences and better information. You can’t fake it because we’re too smart and your competition is a click away.

But the “do-it-yourself” culture of the web encourages brokers to develop their own marketing assets. The trouble is that much of the DIY tools use a cookie-cutter template approach which often results in marketing materials that often don’t resonate with the target audience.

In this 5min video, longtime NPR journalist Ira Glass talks about looking for the gap between your good taste and what you actually produce.

Being self-critical is key to getting better.

In this short video Dan Pink brings some insight to the topic of compensation. Much of what we thought about what motivates & drives employees to perform well turns out to be wrong.

I’m sure we’ll have a thinning out process just like everything else but there is so much traction in this space that I think this new paradigm is here to stay. Certainly there’s a lot of junk out there but this video puts what’s going on into perspective.

This video (and the whole collection) blew me away. Created by a French musician, the video is a mash-up of completely unrelated videos that have been carefully put together to create something completely new. Sure the music is good but it’s really the availability of all the layers needed to create these vids that’s so impressive. (The whole collection is here.)

At a minimum all these things had to line up: inexpensive video cameras, video codecs, hosting, searching, sharing, editing, the opportunity & desire for people to post the initial vids.

Click here to view the embedded video.
(Click here if you can’t see the video.)

So the question is, what’s available in your world that can be mashed-up to create something completely new and interesting to your audience? I bet if you spend some time exploring you’ll find something of value that’s worth sharing.

As so much of successful marketing moves away from canned, corporate-speak, towards authentic conversations it might make sense to look at opportunities and content that already exist.
